Before your project, Price information has been previously collected by other public projects, what is the difference with your model of approach?

Yes, you are right that price information has been collected in succession by three to four projects now. But as you have said, it is PRICE information not Market information. By definition Market information is business resource that contributes to the know how and increases the chances for agricultural chain actors to manage prevailing situations and plan for the future market opportunities. You cannot plan you business based on an indicative price but you need to have data about the desired quality, desired quantities, transaction costs[ input costs e.t.c,], delivery modes and seasonality of the products from the production side to empower you to trade or market of your produce. This model is aimed at supporting the farmers/traders to sell more to the current buyers, source and research for better markets, secure medium and long term markets for sustainable production and markets that offer the best prices.

So what kind of information should we expect from the FIT Model

Market Information shall include but is not limited to : crops and varieties per region, seasonality, price details of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and list of stockists within the 10 km radius, current market prices indicates both retail and wholesale, forecast of market trends, indicative regional production quantities ( planned), weather info, indicate transport price from points of production and list of buyers . Note this will cover both Market and Production side with time.

Which products or commodities are you starting with in the first year?

We are currently covering a total of 44 commodities which fall in 10 categories, namely: Cereals, Fruits, oil Crops, Poultry, Livestock Products, Animal Products, Legumes, Root Crops, Fish and traditional Cash crops. For more information on the commodities under these categories please click here.

Where is the information collected?

We are collecting market data from 6 markets in the central region (Kalerwe, Nakasero, Nakawa, Owino, Kiboga, Masaka), 6 in the east (Jinja, Iganga, Soroti, Kapchorwa, Mbale) 5 in the west (Mbarara, Hoima, Kabale, Kisoro, Kasese) and 3 in the northern region (Lira, Arua and Gulu).

How is the information going to be disseminated to the public?

At the start, we launched a mailing list, where subscribes by emailing to infotrade@fituganda.com. But currently we are setting up notice boards at districts offices, public buildings and in market areas where these price indicaters are being posted. We are also working with other media avenues as content providers such as radio, television and the internet (www.infotradeuganda.com).
